Sam Bass was born in Mitchell, Ind., on July 21, 1851. When he was 18, he built a raft and floated down the Mississippi river to St. Louis, then to Rosedale, Mississippi, where he stayed and worked for a year. He got into trouble, joined a gang, and became an outlaw. They robbed a train and stole $60,000. Sam Bass and his gang made many more robberies, but were finally stopped in 1878 when he was killed by local sheriffs.
